With the year soon coming to a close, many people are already anticipating what 2016 has to offer. Fortunately, the start of the new year is so full of tournaments and festivities and celebrations that cater to myriad interests so everybody has something to look forward to. Just take a look at these events already lined up for early next year:
January 3-9 The Hopman Cup marks the start of the tennis season for 2016. This is an annual international team tournament which is played by mixed gender teams based on country. This will be held in the Perth, Western Australia.
January 6-10 The annual Elvis Festival celebrates everything associated with “The King.” Thousands of fans keep the memory and legacy of Elvis alive through tribute concerts and street parades, among others. This is held in the town of Parkes in New South Wales.
January 7-10 The Summernats Car Festival in Canberra brings together tend of thousands of car enthusiasts to watch over 1000 vehicles be put to the test of precision driving and burnout exhibitions. The same crowd parties into the evening with nightly concerts featuring hip-hop and rock artists.
January 7-26 The Sydney Festival showcases vibrant and diverse shows all over the city performed by over a thousand artists. The sheer volume of performances means that there is something for everyone to enjoy, from large outdoor concerts to smaller, more intimate shows.
January 9 The Jeep Magic Millions Race Day of 2016 is Australia’s first $10 million race day. The event, which features 9 fast-paced races, is a must-see in the international racing scene, drawing racing’s elite and enthusiasts to Australia’s beautiful Gold Coast.
January 18-31 The Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne, Victoria marks the first of the four Grand Slam tournaments in the year, and the only one held in the Southern Hemisphere. The world’s top tennis players compete for the coveted trophy. Tennis fans and enthusiasts from all over can get up close with the star players, as well as enjoy the venue’s entertainment precinct.
January 13-18 The MONA FOMA Festival, or MOFO, is the festival of music and art. Held in collaboration with the MONA art gallery, the festivals boasts of a mix of chamber music to progressive punk to cabaret or even bluegrass. The MOFO festival is held in Hobart, Tasmania.
January 15-24 The Tamworth Country Music Festival in New South Wales is the largest music festival in Australia, and is also when the Country Music Awards of Australia are held. The festival is founded on the Golden Guitar Awards, and top country music players attend and perform. Additional activities include exhibitions, poetry readings and album launches.
January 26 The entire country celebrates Australia Day with thousands of events, from concerts by the harbor and annual ferry race in Sydney, to the gala ball in Darwin, to parades and fireworks in Adelaide.
Other events include the Santos Tour Down Under from January 16-24 and the Crush Festival from January 22-24, both in Adelaide. There’s also the Festival of Sails in Geelong, Victoria, and Tunarama Festival in Port Lincoln, both held from January 22-26.
This is not a complete list by all means, but it sure seems that the start of the year has a lot to offer, and this is just for January!
